Special Collection

These books are about sequences of images, found things; pages as linking devices; books as means of displaying collections themselves. Sometimes in small editions, sometimes one-off books, where form follows idea or content.

Block Book

An ongoing recycling - proofs and misprints that become blockbooks. Mixed media; perfect bound; 12 x 12cm; 1990-present

Litmus

The word litmus hand-cut into pages of litmus powder covered card and dipped in alkaline to acid solutions; edition of 3, 16 x 10cm; 2019

Rainwrites

Text including phonetics, carved onto slate pages, the pages since used as garden ornaments; 30 x 22cm;1988

Made with the help of John Furnival; a map locating the main venues associated with GLOUP and the Gloucestershire Concrete Poetry movement; 2012

Ceremonial Objects

Relief prints taken directly from familiar objects.  Single sheet printed on both sides and folded into a concertina; 28 x 19.5cm; edition of 50; 2013

Home

A series of symbols and pictograms expressing the idea of house or home. This was made for the Sitting Room exhibition, initially at Manchester University then touring. Screenprint and letterpress with hand-cut apertures; map-fold with board covers; edition of 20; 15 x 11cm; 2008

Edge

A text about boundaries and territories, with the text pushed to edge of each page. Letterpress; concertina; edition of 20; 35 x 24cm; 2013 

Medium Weight Words

A rizla book with printed leaves – each word linking those before and after to construct a simple narrative. Letterpress and medium-weight cigarette papers; edition of 25; 7.5 x 2.5cm; 2004

Driftwood Book

Every artist has a driftwood artwork in their closet. Circle/line/cross symbols. Driftwood case with inserted objects; unique work; 26 x 16cm; 1986

50 Adhesive Labels

A roll of labels with each image or text connecting to the previous to create a linear relationship. Inkjet printed on commercial sticky-backed labels in a card box; edition of 50; 11 x 7.5 x 7.5cm; 2005

A fifth image sequences. Single sheet folded to a concertina; initially a woodcut in a limited edition of 5 then a screenprint; edition of 12; 12 x12cm closed; 2007

Six New Printers’ Fists

This was never intended to be a book - I printed six linocuts (this one The Inept Handyman) for an exhibition of Alternative Printers’ Fists organised by Danny Flynn in 2010. I bound them together and they had a later glory in book form as part of Tim Jollands’ Show of Hands project in 2019. 29 x 13cm
